Obesity and link to cancer of concern to weight-loss center

Posted February 12, 2010
Losing weight is about more than looking good in a new outfit; there are serious medical health risks associated with being overweight and obese. Being obese puts you at risk for serious conditions including high blood pressure, heart disease, strokes, high cholesterol, diabetes, arthritis and sleep apnea. There is no secret to the fact that obesity lowers life expectancy. Another lesser-known risk factor is the link between obesity and cancer. Results from a 1999-2000 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey reported by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) shows that an estimated 64 percent of U.S. adults are either overweight or obese. That has increased 8 percent compared to a study conducted in 1988-1994. Other figures are startling:
  • Nearly one third of all adults are obese.
  • The number of children and teens, ages 6 to 19, who are overweight tripled from 1980 to 2000.
NCI scientists have lots to say about the relationship between obesity and inactive lifestyles and cancer; cancers of the colon, breast (postmenopausal), endometrium, kidney, and esophagus being among them. In 2002, they reported that about 41,000 new cases of cancer in the United States were estimated to be due to obesity. St. Joseph’s Center for Weight Management in Park Rapids and Innovis Health want to raise awareness of the health risks associated with being overweight and obese. “This is not a cosmetic issue,” says Leah Walters, Bariatric Coordinator. “The health risks associated with being overweight and obese are tremendous and preventable.” That is why Nevis school will be hosting a “Coaches Against Cancer” event Friday, Feb. 19 at the Nevis home girls’ basketball game. Hot pink socks worn by players, special “split the pot” games, and more will help raise awareness on behalf of this serious health issue. St. Joseph’s Center for Weight Management specializes in programs to help people lose weight by surgical and non-surgical means. A multi-disciplinary team offers follow-up care, support, and educational opportunities for the patients they serve. In addition, the center brings outreach and awareness opportunities such as “Coaches Against Cancer” and the local POWER UP! 2010 Wellness Challenge (in association with area community education programs) to the region.
